 Elements of a democracy
Democracy is a system of government in which all the citizens of a country can vote to elect their representatives.
These representatives form the government and take decisions on behalf of the people.
The key elements of a democracy are –
participation of the people
Decision making
Resolution of conflicts on the basis of equality and justice.

Participation of the people

The participation of the people is the foundation of the democracy.
The people choose their representatives to form the government. People vote in the elections to elect their representatives for a period of five years.
If a government fails to function in the people interest, they can show their disappointment by not electing them in next election.
Secondly, the people act as a continuous examiners of the policy makers. They openly express their views and criticize the government, if necessary.
They express their disapproval in multiple ways such as-rallies, dharnas, strikes, and signature campaigns.
The media like newspapers and T.V. also play an important role in expressing the views of the people and making the government realise its responsibilities.

NEED TO RESOLVE CONFLICT

Conflicts occur when people of different cultures, religions, regions or economic backgrounds do not get along with each other, or when some among them feel they are being discriminated against.
People may use violent means to settle their differences. This leads to fear and tension among others living in an area. The government is responsible for helping to resolve conflicts.
Religious processions and celebrations can sometimes lead to conflicts. For example, the route a procession takes may lead to a conflict.
Rivers too can become a source of conflict between states. A river may begin in one state, flow through another and end in a third. The sharing of river water between different states that the river goes through is becoming an issue of conflict.
For example, you may have heard about the Kaveri water dispute between Karnataka and Tamil Nadu.

EQUALITY AND JUSTICE
One of the key ideas of a democratic government is its commitment to equality and justice. Equality and justice are inseparable.
The earlier practice of untouchability is now banned by law.
-equal status – in education, employment, status of women in society, etc.
